How old must you be to do jewellery?
This question has 2 answers ... permit me to
explain.
1.) There is no age limit when learning how to
make beautiful jewellery in silver and gold. In
fact, the earlier you can start, the better. A lot
of the techniques used in jewellery manufacture is
fairly simple to understand, but takes a lot of
practice to master.
2.) With that said, we have made a decision and
prefer to teach people between 16 and 70 years old ,
but have made exceptions in the past (our eldest
student to date is 79 ). Some of the materials and
equipment we use are hazardous if not used /
operated correctly. We teach you how to work with
gas flame torches, acids, flexi shaft drills,
buffing machines, etc. and therefore prefer to stick
to a minimum age of 16 years.
We do however offer a lot of workshops where a
specific technique is taught, many of them "Kid
Friendly".

How will I know if this is for me?
From experience we can tell you that you will know,
the first time you pick up a jewellers saw and start
sawing, if this is for you. But generally, if
you like working with your hands, and don't mind
getting them a bit dirty, you would definitely enjoy
it. The thrill you get from creating a beautiful
piece of jewellery can not be surpassed. The best of
all, the satisfaction when friends and family ask
you where you got that beautiful piece of jewellery,
and you smugly answer: "I made it myself!".

What equipment do you have?
Our studio is well equipped for general jewellery
making. We have everything you will need to
melt your own metal, make your own plate and wire;
Hammer, dome, punch and shape any piece of metal;
Sand, file and polish just about anything. We
are not however equipped to do large volume
castings. We do teach wax carving but send the

How long is
the class?
Any of our classes during the week is 2 hours long.
We are quite strict on timing and classes start and
end promptly. If you are not able to attend a
booked class, you can catch up that class within the
month of missing it.
Our Workshops are generally 4 - 5 hours long and
you should be able to complete your project in that
time.

What will I make and learn in my first class?
You will make a basic wedding band in copper.
Learn how jewellers measure and make a ring to size,
then start to saw, anneal and bend a flat sheet of
copper. Soldering skills teach you how to keep
the two ends together. Using a ring mandrel or
triblet and a rawhide mallet you will learn how to
shape the ring into a perfectly round shape.

Are the tools I need
expensive?
They are not cheap, but because they are jewellers
quality, they should last you a lifetime. We
give each new student a list of basic tools and show
them what each one looks like and what it does.
We have a small "shop" on
the premises, stocked with all the basic consumables
like saw blades, drill bits and sandpaper etc.
You can also buy all your jewellery tools directly
from us.
